Food Safety News recently posted an important lettuce/salad recall. You may want to see if you have any of the recalled products.

• Fresh Express recalled Hearts of Romaine Salad with a use-by date of October 11 and Product Code of S270A24. Food safety testing done by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration yielded a positive result for Salmonella as part of the FDA’s random sample testing program.

Voluntary Recall of Select Packages of Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite Size Original and Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite Size

{Copied directly from FDA website} FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 8, 2012 – We have initiated a voluntary recall due to the possible presence of fragments of flexible metal mesh from a faulty manufacturing part. Recalled products include only Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite Size Original and Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite Size with the letters KB, AP or FK before or after the Best If Used Before date. Texas Firm Recalls Beef and Pork Products Produced Without Benefit of Inspection and Misbranding

WASHINGTON, Oct. 15, 2012 – Lao Chareune Foods, a Dallas, Texas, establishment, is recalling approximately 8,200 pounds of various beef and pork products because they were produced without the benefit of federal inspection and misbranded, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The following products are subject to recall: [View Labels]
3-oz. and 8-oz. packages containing “Pork Snack Stick”
3.20-oz. packages containing “Seasoned Fried Beef”
1.76-oz. packages containing “Fried Pork Skins”
1.20-oz. packages containing “Sliced Fried Pork Ears.”

Each package bears the establishment number “EST. 13479″ inside the USDA mark of inspection. There are no production or expiration dates on the products in commerce. The pork snack stick is also misbranded in that it is raw and as such cannot be labeled as a snack stick. FSIS has determined that the products were produced from May 22, 2012 to the present and distributed to retail establishments in Louisiana and Texas.

Nature’s Recipe Voluntarily Recalls Nature’s Recipe Oven Baked Biscuits With Real Chicken Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 13, 2012 – Nature’s Recipe brand is voluntarily recalling a limited supply of Nature’s Recipe® Oven Baked Biscuits with Real Chicken, manufactured in one of its U.S. production facilities. This is being done as a precautionary measure, as the product has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products.

 Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

No pet or consumer illnesses from this product have been reported to date. However, because of its commitment to safety and quality, the Company is conducting a voluntary recall of this product.

The potentially affected lots of Nature’s Recipe Oven Baked Biscuits with Real Chicken were distributed nationally, primarily through pet specialty retailers.

Nature’s Recipe Oven Baked Biscuits with Real Chicken is sold in 19-ounce stand-up resealable pouches. The product affected by this recall is identified below and has the following “Best If Used By” dates:

Product and product lots that do not appear on the list above are not subject to this recall.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
